What to Expect

The Prince George Iceman comprised of 5 events and is open to participants of all ages. It’s a race for everyone from beginner to elite athletes, and includes both solo and relay team categories. 

The day starts with an 8km cross-country ski, followed by a 10km run, a 5km skate, a second 5km run, and last but not least, an 800m swim. (Junior competitors complete different distances) The wraps up with a fantastic buffet and awards ceremony.

If the weather causes the outdoor oval to melt, there will be no skate and no refunds will be given.

Packet Pick-up Info

When?

The day before the event (ie. on Saturday) from 5 pm to 7 pm.

COURTYARD by MARRIOTT in the FRASER ROOM – 900 Brunswick Street (directly across from the Civic Centre)

Make sure you have registered!

*Please note that we can’t offer package pick up earlier than 5pm; please keep in mind that we are a volunteer committee with jobs and families and are unable to open up package pick up early than 5pm*

Can I pick up the race package on behalf of my team?

Yes! It is important to know your team name before you come to package pickup.

Can I pick up the race package for another competitor?

Yes. However, it is important that you pass along the important information provided at race package pick-up to that person – most importantly the safety issues (obey volunteers at train crossings, no headphones on the course and mandatory helmets during the skate) and their start time for the ski at Otway.

Late Package Pick-Up

If you’re from out of town and won’t be able to pick up your race packet at the date/time listed above, late package pick-up can be done at the Aquatic Centre at 8 a.m on the morning of the event.

All skiers ages categories start at this time. We ask that you organize & place yourself in the start staging area based on your ski level/abilities.

Where should my bib be placed?

Your bib must be placed in an easily visualized spot on the front of your outer layer.

Timing Chip

PICK-UP – There is one timing chip per solo competitor and per team. The timing chips are picked up in the Otway Ski Cabin the morning of the race (time to be provided at package pick-up) and you must have your bib number to pick up the chip.

WHERE TO WEAR – The timing chip can either be worn like a velcroed on watch or placed on your lanyard provided at package pickup (except for swimmers who are to wear it on their wrist).

HANDING THE CHIP OFF – The timing chip is passed from team member to team member in each transition zone.

Course description and lengh

8 km (2 x 4 km laps) freestyle on a moderate, maintained course.

Classic or skate technique? - Freestyle!

You can do either classic or skate technique. Many participants chose to skate because it tends to be faster, but certainly there are people doing both. The important thing is that you Just Do It!

Is there anywhere to rent cross-country skis?

Yes! You can rent skis at the Otway Nordic Centre.

Can I wear my headphones?

No. Headphones are not allowed for safety reasons.

Otway to Ice Oval

10km Run Information

Route description and Distance

10 km on an undulating course from the ski facility to the outdoor ice oval.

Exit the Otway Nordic Ski Centre and turn RIGHT onto Otway Road. Run east on Otway Road until Foothills Boulevard. Head south on Foothills Boulevard to 18th Avenue. From there you will head into the Outdoor Ice Oval area.

Hazards - Trains!!

There are two level crossings on Otway Road and trains can cross at any time during the race. There will be volunteers at each crossing. You MUST stop for all trains and follow the instructions of the volunteers. Do not worry about your time – the delay will be deducted from your time. Any participant not following this rule will be DISQUALIFIED.

Aid Stations

There are two water/Gatorade aid stations:  one is part way down Otway and one partway up Foothills.

Can I wear my headphones, run with my dog or run with my child in a stroller?

NO – Running with headphones, dogs or strollers is NOT allowed.

Outdoor Ice Oval

Skate Information

Skate DIstance & Laps

The skate is 5 km, which is 12 laps at the Outdoor Ice Oval

Types of skates allowed

Any kind of skates can be worn. Hockey skates, figures skates, speed skates or Nordic blades (blades that attach to your Nordic ski boots).

Helmet Regulations

Helmets are required!!! Any kind of helmet will do: bike helmet, hockey helmet, speed skating helmet. You will not be allowed to skate without one.

If you do not wear a helmet you will be DISQUALIFIED.

Can I do warm up laps?

Yes, limited warm up space will be available on the ice.

Counting laps

Each skater will be responsible for counting their own laps using handheld counters. These will be provided to each soloist/team at the Ice Oval when you arrive, and must be returned at the Ice Oval after the skate. 

**Remember that when you click over to 12 that you are finished, you don’t do another lap**.

Can I wear my headphones?

Oval to the pool

5km Run Information

Route description and distance

5 km flat course through Pinewood subdivision to the Aquatic Centre.

Heads south from the Oval to 22nd Avenue and then winds through the Pinewood subdivision and out to Ospika. The route then heads north on Ospika to 18th Avenue and west to the Aquatic Centre.

Aid Stations

There is a water station at the very beginning of the 5km just as you head into the path to leave the Oval.

Can I wear my headphones, run with my dog or run with my child in a stroller?

NO – Running with headphones, dogs or strollers is NOT allowed.

Swim Information

Swim DIstance & Laps

800m at the Prince George Aquatic Centre

All swimmers enter pool at the same corner, swim 50m  lengths, touch wall at the end, and duck under the lane rope EVERY length. 

At the end of the last lane, swimmers exit the pool, return to the start, and repeat the lanes. swimmers DO NOT need to touch the wall, simply exit via the ladder.

How the swim works

NO DIVING – Feet first entry. 

All swimmers enter pool at the same corner, swim 50m  lengths, and duck under the lane rope EVERY length. At the end of the last lane, swimmers get out, return to the start, and repeat the lanes.

Swimmers must touch wall at the end of each pool length EXCEPT when exiting the pool. When exiting the pool (either to finish the race or start the next set of lengths), swimmers DO NOT need to touch the wall, simply exit via the ladder.

Team Number markings

You need to have your team number marked on both sides of the upper arm. Junior swimmers need a “J” marked below their number. 

Our volunteers would be happy to do this for you on race day at the Aquatic Centre starting from 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.. Or, you can grab your own Jiffy marker and have a friend or family member do it for you. It is important to follow the marking instructions provided by the volunteers.

Please DO NOT wear any elastics or bracelets on your wrists as it confuses the swim volunteers.

What is the Cut-off time?

All participants must reach the Skate portion of the event by 1:30 pm, or the end of the course by 3:00 pm.

Please recognize these times are necessary out of respect for our volunteers and to allow the banquet to begin on time.

I’m going to be famished after I rock this event, what about grub?

We have a fabulous buffet lunch ready for you at the Civic Centre.

Doors open at 1:30 p.m. and the proceedings start at 2:00 p.m.

I participated as a soloist or as a member of a team, do I have to pay for my banquet ticket?

As a participant, your banquet ticket is included with your registration fee. Extra banquet tickets are available for purchase on the registration website and at package pick-up.

WHAT IF I WANT AN EXTRA TICKET?

We encourage all participants to order any extra banquet tickets needed for family or friends with their registration as we only sell 30 tickets at package pick up and ran out of tickets during our 2019 Iceman. Unfortunately there are no exceptions to allowing entry without a ticket, even if you are a parent of a child who participated. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE order any extra tickets you’ll need with registration!

The Adult Team age category is determined by the age of the youngest Adult on your team.

Having a Junior (10 – 15 year old) on your team will not impact your team category. However, if a Junior person participates in an Adult Team, the Junior must do the Adult distance for their leg/portion.
